Regarded as one of the best wilderness whitewater trips in the world, the Middle Fork has it all: clear water, hot springs and spectacular canyons. From the put-in at Boundary Creek to the Cache Bar take-out you will spend six days and five nights paddling the 105 miles of the Middle Fork of the Salmon.
As the premiere alpine river in the country, the Middle Fork of the Salmon drops 2700 ft in it’s 105 miles, providing heart pounding whitewater excitement with crystal clear waters. It is a wonderfully diverse river with whitewater ranging from long technical rapids that require precise maneuvering, to exhilarating drops at Velvet and Tappan Falls.The big waves of Impassable Canyon offer a fantastic finish to this exciting whitewater trip. There are over 80 rapids in all with the largest being class IV.
Your instructors will point out all the best play spots and will help you develop your skills on the Middle Fork’s class III-IV whitewater. Our rafting outfitter will carry all of our camp needs and gear along with providing excellent meals. All you have to do at camp is relax, enjoy gourmet meals, and take in the beauty of the ‘River of No Return’ wilderness. This first class service allows you to fully enjoy your whitewater while we do all the work.
A unique element of Tarkio’s trip on the Middle Fork is that we maintain a close student-to-instructor ratio (usually 4:1). This ratio instills confidence in tentative paddlers and affords advanced boaters the chance to refine technique. Remember there is a rafting option. If you would like to kayak and your friend or partner would prefer to raft, no worries, we can accommodate everyone!
